Keen to discover this Georgian market town with its golden limestone buildings and prestigious school heritage? Oundle offers period properties alongside modern developments, all within walking distance of independent shops and riverside walks. Keep reading to see what it has to offer.
Oundle stands as one of England’s most architecturally coherent market towns, built almost entirely from golden limestone that creates a harmonious streetscape unmatched in the region. Located on the River Nene in North Northamptonshire, the town lies equidistant between Peterborough and Corby, with easy reach of the A14 corridor.
The town’s history stretches back over 1,000 years, with its market charter granted in 1200. However, Oundle’s transformation from sleepy market town to architectural gem began in earnest during the 17th and 18th centuries, when wealthy merchants rebuilt much of the town centre in the distinctive local stone. This gives Oundle its remarkable visual unity – unlike many English towns that grew piecemeal over centuries.
Property styles: Oundle’s architecture centres on golden limestone buildings dating from the 17th to 19th centuries, creating the town’s distinctive uniform appearance. The Market Square and surrounding streets feature Georgian and Victorian terraced houses with original sash windows and stone facades.
Modern developments on the town’s periphery include executive homes and family-friendly estates, whilst converted barns and period cottages dot the surrounding villages.
The finest period properties line West Street and North Street, where Georgian townhouses offer spacious family accommodation with original features intact. South of the Market Square, narrower streets contain smaller terraced homes ideal for first-time buyers, whilst Benefield Road showcases substantial Victorian villas with large gardens.
Development: The Cotterstock Meadows development by Vistry East Anglia brings 200+ new homes to the eastern edge of town, featuring three and four-bedroom properties with shared ownership options available.
Oundle enjoys excellent road connections despite its historic setting, making it surprisingly well-connected for both work and leisure travel.
Car & Road: The A427 provides direct routes to Peterborough (20 mins) and connects to the A47 for Leicester (45 mins) and Birmingham (90 mins). The A605 offers swift access to the A14, placing Cambridge just 50 minutes away and London within 90 minutes via the M11. Parking in the town centre includes Market Place spaces and several car parks behind the main streets.
Bus: Regular services connect Oundle to Peterborough every 30 mins during weekdays, with Stagecoach operating the main routes. The X4/X7 service provides connections to the broader area, whilst local services reach nearby villages including Thrapston and Oundle School.
Train: Corby Station (20 minutes by car) offers direct services to London St Pancras in just over one hour, with trains running every 30 minutes during peak times.
Oundle’s compact size means most attractions lie within a few minutes’ walk, perfect for those wanting history and culture on their doorstep.
Oundle’s employment landscape reflects its role as both a historic service centre and modern commuter town, offering diverse opportunities within the town and excellent links to major employment centres.
Major local employers include Oundle School, which provides numerous teaching, administrative and support roles, plus seasonal positions during school holidays. The town centre supports independent retailers, restaurants and professional services, whilst the surrounding rural area offers opportunities in agriculture, estate management and tourism. Several small manufacturing businesses operate from industrial units on the town’s outskirts.
Growing sectors include education support services, hospitality linked to heritage tourism, and home-based professional services taking advantage of improved broadband infrastructure.
